Bored and Feeling Stuck
An executive with a prominent financial institution was at the end of his tether. He was bored and unchallengedbut his efforts to change his assignment within his company were frustrated by a series of downsizings that had made job mobility impossible. Having worked for the company for many years, he had no confidence that his skills would have any value in the outside job market. Although his job performance was fine, his manager was concerned about his obvious lack of satisfaction. She did not want to lose him, but was concerned that his feelings could have a negative impact on her whole team.
An Outplacement Option
The manager spoke with her HR manager, and together they worked out an offer for the executive: “Go spend some time with the folks at Power Transitions and get a reality check about your goals and marketability outside the company. If they advise you to stay here, we will accommodate you. If they believe you can find more job satisfaction on the outside, and if you agree with them, we will provide you with a severance package and outplacement services.”
How PowerTransitions Helped
We met with the executive, and were immediately impressed by his energy, drive and intelligence. We did a “dry run” resume interview to identify major accomplishments that shoulld be highlighted as part of his marketing campaign. We arranged informational interviews with recruiters we knew we could trust to give an honest assessment of his marketability. Our conclusion was that his skills were eminently transferable to a new company. Based on our advice, and on the comfort level he had developed with us, he took a deep breath and accepted the package.
Landing a New Challenge
After a three-month, highly energetic search, he landed the position of COO of a small analytics consulting firm serving the banking industrywith a significant boost in compensation.
